The powerful image-editing application that used to be called Pixelmator Photo when it was only available for iPad and iPhone launched Tuesday on Mac as Photomator.

It promises state-of-the-art color adjustments, AI tools, powerful Repair and Clone tools, and batch editing. But it faces tough competition from Adobe Photoshop.

Photomator makes the jump from iPad to Mac

Photoshop is the 500-pound gorilla of image-editing software. It launched exclusively on Macintosh way back in 1990, and quickly became the industry standard. It’s still the go-to choice for experts, but it’s expensive.

Photomator for Mac is also designed for professionals, with features like color adjustments handled by a texture-aware algorithm.

And it has AI-powered photo enhancement, denoising, and image upscaling. And automatic subject, sky, and background selections, too.

Although the application made its debut on iPad and iPhone, the Mac version takes advantage of native macOS technologies such as Apple silicon, Swift UI, Core ML, Core Image and Metal.

Photomator is available now in the Mac App Store. There’s a one-week free trial, after which it is $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Or the application is available for $99.99 as a one-time fee. Those who recently bought the iPad/iPhone version can get the Mac one for free.

For comparison, Adobe Photoshop costs $20.99 per month.

Pixelmator also offers Pixelmator Pro, software intended to help create designs from the ground up. Photomator has a different focus: editing existing images.
